Exercise 4: Review the Experiments & Select the Best Model¶
Objective¶
In this lab, we will:
- Review the performance of different models and runs
- Select the Model with the best performance
What you will learn
- How to query and analyze metadata for multiple MLflow runs.
- The process of promoting a specific model version to the Model Registry.
- How to uniquely name and version models for production deployment.
MLOps Perspective
Model registration is the bridge between training and deployment. By promoting a run to a registry, we decouple the "experimentation" phase from the "serving" phase. This enables CI/CD pipelines to automatically pick up the latest "Production" version without manual file swaps. In a mature MLOps setup, the transition from a run to a registered model often involves an automated validation gate (e.g., comparing the new model against a baseline). Here, we perform this selection manually to understand the criteria used before automating the process.
Prerequisites¶
- Experiments are completed
- Results are stored on MLflow
Step 1: Find and Open the Jupyter Notebook¶
Please open the notebook, "04_model_registration.ipynb" in the same directory "labs/01_beginner/bike_demand_forecasting".
Step 2: Set the MLflow Remote Tracking Server¶
💡 Note: The link to the MLflow server will be provided during the workshop!
You should replace the MLFLOW_REMOTE_TRACKING_SERVER with this provided URL.
Step 3: Define a Unique Experiment Name¶
💡 Note: All participants share a single MLflow Server instance. To avoid mixing your results with others, you must use a unique experiment name.
Use your first name or a unique dummy name to replace YOUR_FIRSTNAME when defining your experiment name, as discussed in the previous lab.
Step 4: Review the Experiments' Results¶
At this step, you should just run the cell and review the output. Analyzing the results (i.e. comparing the metrics), you'll identify the best-performing model configuration and select it for further evaluation or deployment.
Step 5: Select the Best-Performing experiment¶
When prompted in the notebook, please select the run (run-name) which has performed the best.
Summary¶
In this exercise, you:
- Reviewed experiment results from MLflow
- Compared model performance metrics
- Selected the best-performing model run
- Registered the best model in MLflow
